From Tourists to Teachers in a few Days

Two years ago my husband and I decided to “give up” our lives in Canada and travel around the world. We wanted to see new places, experience different cultures, and learn to live with fewer material possessions.

After having travelled Europe for the past year we began yearning for a non-tourist experience. We wanted to immerse ourselves into a community and culture for a while, instead of hopping from city to city. Before we left on our travels we took a TEFL course just in case an opportunity to teach English presented itself. We started looking online for teaching opportunities in Southeast Asia but such work was akin to looking for a needle in a haystack: we did not have any luck finding a school that was reputable or work that reflected a good fit for us.

A friend referred us to ESL101 so we began checking out the thousands of job postings for Asia. We were able to narrow our search by location and salary expectation. On Monday morning we applied for jobs within the same language centre that was looking for two English language teachers. By the afternoon we had an offer for two full-time positions teaching English to children in Thailand for four months. In addition, the company was willing to help us find accommodation and provide assistance getting settled in the community. What an opportunity! We arranged a telephone interview and arrived in Thailand the next Monday.

Without ESL101 we don’t think we would have managed to find work as quickly as we did or with a reputable company. Thank you!
