What is a gig?

A temporary job. Usually void of benefits, such as health care, and pensions. They pay either hourly or as one lump sum. Some longer-term gigs may be salaried but they’re also void of restrictive bosses that have a certain quasi-ownership of their employees.

Living in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia makes it really easy to get to many other countries in the Middle East. In one of my previous blogs, I explained how easy it is to drive across the bridge to Bahrain. Now, I did say, although it’s easy, it’s not quick because the mass amounts of people who flood the border. So, it might be convenient but it’s not quick.

As a woman, I’m often asked about covering my hair in the Middle East. Since I’m not Muslim, it’s not required. However, would it be best to just cover my hair anyway? You pretty much get to choose. There are a few things you should consider though. Although you don’t have to cover up, you do want to remember to be culturally sensitive. What does this look like?

Orientalism is a way of seeing that imagines, emphasizes, exaggerates and distorts differences of Middle Eastern peoples and cultures as compared to that of Europe and the U.S. (West).
